Apprenticeship Schemes

A major accomplishment has been the appointment of the Construction Association of Bermuda as the accredited sponsor for the National Center for Construction Education and Research (June 2002). The CAOB has also been made a partner in the Craft and Apprenticeship Training, together with the National Training Board.

The training delivery of all programs is competency based, and works in tandem with national standards and towards national certification of trades by the Government.

Responsibility for the oversight and direction of the CAOB trade training programs rests with the Board of Directors of the CAOB. Craft training is performed by NCCER Certified Instructors at CAOB approved facilities.

Participation & Eligibility

Trainees registering as official apprentices must be approved and registered with the National Training Board prior to commencing any training.

Apprentices must be recommended by their employer and:

  1. Must have completed the employer´s probationary period
  2. Must have a record of dependable attendance and safe working practices

Trainees not registered, as official apprentices with the National Training Board must meet the eligibility requirements of their respective Training Units as a minimum requirement. All trainees and apprentices must be registered with the CAOB and the NCCER.

The CAOB would like to point out that recruitment, selection, employment and training of all participants in the program shall be without discrimination of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation or disability.

Safety Policy Statement

CAOB is firmly committed to operating all of its programs in a safe manner, and in compliance with all health & safety and environmental regulations. Our goal is to provide a safe learning environment, free of recognized hazards.

Each Training Unit is required to have its own Health and Safety Policy Statement and Plan, addressing conditions and variables that are applicable to their area of expertise.

The above is to be done in accordance with the Health and Safety Act 1982.

Training Standards

All NCCER Craft Training will be delivered in NCCER modular format and will consist of the following tests for each module:

  1. A written test with an achieved score of 70% or higher
  2. Successful completion of the task module performance or hands on test. The instructor is to use the criteria provided by the 4. NCCER will administer the evaluation. This is a pass/fail examination.

Candidates who already possess gained knowledge and experience, may qualify as exempt of NCCER materials and classes by passing the required examinations.

One attempt will be allowed for each class. Failure to pass will require candidates to attend the required instruction. "Testing out" is not an option where training is required as the result of failing to make the cut score of an authorized assessment.

Program Attendance

All trainees will be required to attend classes promptly as scheduled. Anyone arriving after the start of class is to be listed on the attendance sheet as tardy, three of these will constitute one absence.

As a guideline, any participant whose arrival time is such that they will have missed at least 20% of that session may be considered absent. Trainees who are absent for at least 5% of any training program without an acceptable excuse may be dropped from the program and may be subject to further disciplinary action.
